 The
Llangollen canal is remote and
picturesque, completely away from the
hustle and bustle of towns and cities.
However, there are plenty of convenience
stores and country pubs serving food and
drink all day long. From leaving the
boatyard, take a nice relaxing cruise to
Barbridge Junction where there is a
choice of hostelries for your first
evening.On
day 2, experience your first
challenge at Hurleston Locks. There are
4 locks together, forming the gateway to
the Llangollen canal. (these are always
manned during high season) Consider a
lunch stop in the small village of
Wrenbury with a choice of pubs and
friendly shops, with the infamous
Wrenbury
lift
bridge. Continue cruising passing the
village of Marbury, then encounter your
2nd challenge of Grindley Brook Locks,
with a night stop around this area.
On day 3, the
market town of Whitchurch forms a handy
mid-week stop to stock up on provisions,
there are also train stations and buses
etc. Continuing on, will pass through
the Shropshire countryside, crossing the
Welsh border into Clwyd, carrying on to
Ellesmere - a lovely place to stop for
lunch.
Your afternoon cruise
will take you to the first of the two
aqueducts and your 2nd tunnel at Chirk,
where the evening could be spent.
On day 4, you
will experience the awesome, world
famous, Ponty Aqueduct. Take time to
appreciate the views and history of this
historic landmark of the North Western
canals. The remainder of day 4 can be
spent weaving through the Welsh hills
into Llangollen.
Enjoy the return from
a different angle, visiting different
villages and pubs. (Remember the return
is always faster). |
